5600 m³ Package, Project for Documenta 4, Kassel

1986

From For Joseph Beuys
Collotype and silkscreen with collage (photos, tape, polyurethane and twine), on rag paper, 80 x 60 cm (31½ x 23¾ in). Edition of 90 + XXX, signed and numbered.

For documenta IV in 1968, Christo and Jeanne-Claude realized the 5,600 Cubic Meter Package, a monumental, air-filled sculpture made of synthetic fabric. Reaching a height of 85.3 meters, it set a new record and was considered their most technically demanding project to date. After carefully evaluating various locations, they chose the expansive Auepark in Kassel, Germany, to maximize the spatial impact of the installation. Scientific planning began in 1967 at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where the artist duo collaborated with mechanics expert Dimiter S. Zagoroff. Wind tunnel tests confirmed that the structure could flexibly respond to air currents, deform under pressure, and subsequently return to its original shape.
This edition documents the ephemeral artwork and illustrates its conceptual and aesthetic significance within the artistic practice of Christo and Jeanne-Claude.

Per Kirkeby created this edition for the group portfolio For Joseph Beuys, which Schellmann and Klüser had initiated to commemorate Beuys’ death. Kirkeby and Beuys, both pivotal figures in postwar European art, moved in some of the same artistic and institutional circles during the 1970s and 1980s.

Imi Knoebel’s edition Untitled (1986) is a reflection on the death of Joseph Beuys. At its center is a solid blue square, reminiscent of Malevich’s Black Square, around which fiberboard panels are arranged in varying configurations. This composition evokes the image of a fixed star and its satellites, with the square potentially symbolizing Beuys’ enduring influence. The panels represent the continued radiance of his ideas.

Edizione Notturna

1987

From For Joseph Beuys
Page of newspaper mounted on rag paper, with collage of two collotype/silkscreen prints, 76 x 57 cm. Edition of 90 + XXX, signed and numbered, and 10 Artist's Proofs, signed, not numbered.

In homage to Joseph Beuys, Jannis Kounellis integrated one of his characteristic black-and-white drawings into the Italian daily newspaper Corriere della Sera for this edition. One part of the newspaper thus becomes the carrier of the artwork, while another part – through a performative gesture of sacrifice –was torn by Kounellis. Through this symbolic act, the artist alludes to the transformative power of material and the radical renewal of art, which also defined Beuys’ practice.

A Pyramid

1987

From For Joseph Beuys
Silkscreen on rag paper, 61 x 81.3 cm (24 x 32 in). Edition of 90 + XXX, signed and numbered.

This edition, which Sol LeWitt contributed to the group portfolio dedicated to Joseph Beuys, features a pyramid-like structure composed of several tapering triangles arranged in a semicircular formation. The strict geometry stands in stark contrast to the surrounding empty space, creating a sense of volume, depth, and an almost contemplative spatial presence.

Wind Stones

1986

From For Joseph Beuys
Offset lithograph and silkscreen on white board, 60 x 80 cm (23½ x 31½ in). Edition of 90 + XXX, signed and numbered.

This edition, Richard Long’s contribution to the portfolio commemorating Joseph Beuys, unfolds a quiet, contemplative narrative of landscape. In a barren scene in Lapland – shaped by dryness, emptiness, and wind – Long draws attention to a single overgrown stone mound, used by hikers as a windbreak. This site, reduced to its elemental function, becomes a symbol of retreat and protection in a hostile environment. In this work, Long intertwines the perception of nature with existential reflection, continuing Beuys’s idea of landscape as a repository of cultural and spiritual meaning – reduced, powerful, and full of quiet intensity.

Untitled – for Joseph Beuys

1986

From For Joseph Beuys
Lithograph on rag paper, 81.3 x 61 cm (32 x 24 in). Edition of 90 + XXX, signed and numbered.

This edition by Robert Longo is a striking lithograph dedicated to the work of Joseph Beuys. At its center is a skull-like form in bold blue and red, framed by a dark, grid-like element. This tension-filled composition evokes themes such as life, death, and transformation. With clear, pared-down means, Longo unfolds a symbolically charged visual language. The energetic density of the motif alludes to Beuys’ understanding of art as a vehicle for social change. Longo’s work is thus not only an homage, but also a continuation of the core ideas of his artistic role model.

Cross

1986

From For Joseph Beuys
Lithograph on rag paper, 81.3 x 61 cm (32 x 24 in). Edition of 90 + XXX, signed and numbered.

At the center of the edition Cross, Robert Mapplethorpe’s contribution to the group portfolio honoring the late Joseph Beuys, is a close-up photograph of a human torso, with the navel – a point of origin and connection – positioned precisely at the intersection of a bold, gold cross. As the literal and symbolic center of the body, the navel becomes the focal point of the composition, which reflects the formal precision and symmetry characteristic of Mapplethorpe’s meticulous aesthetic. The cross itself serves as a poignant reference both to Beuys’ passing and to the latter's own frequent use of the cross motif throughout his oeuvre, where it functioned as a charged emblem of myth, healing, transformation, and spiritual inquiry.

Burning Hat

1986/1987

From For Joseph Beuys
Silkscreen on black rag paper, 60 x 80 cm (23½ x 31¾ in). Edition of 90 + XXX + 10 A.P., signed and numbered.

Nam June Paik created this silkscreen edition as part of the group portfolio For Joseph Beuys, paying tribute to the influential German artist and fellow Fluxus member. Rendered in vivid reds and oranges, the print shows a fedora-style hat – Beuys’ iconic trademark – engulfed in flames. The image oscillates between homage and transformation, symbolizing Beuys’ radical legacy and his mythologized persona. With characteristic wit and symbolism, Paik turns the burning hat into a visual metaphor: for transmission, sacrifice, memory, and creative energy. The work reflects the close bond between the two artists, both of whom embraced performance, pedagogy, and the merging of art with life. Burning Hat becomes a poetic, visual eulogy – at once personal and universal.

Carro dormente

1987

From For Joseph Beuys
Printed folder with one woodcut, 80.5 x 60.5 cm and one lithograph, 80 x 60 cm, both on Hosokawa Japanese paper, in a linocut printed folder of Arches rag paper. Edition: 90 + XXX (+ 10 A.P.), signed and numbered on woodcut.

Mimmo Paladino’s edition for the group portfolio For Joseph Beuys serves as a poetic homage to the German artist. True to Paladino’s signature style, the works are steeped in symbolism and ambiguity. The red lithograph offers a minimalist, almost totemic form – abstract yet evocative – while the black woodcut presents a more figurative composition, rich in gestural lines and ritualistic resonance. Together, the prints convey a tension between presence and absence, form and myth, abstraction and figuration. Referencing themes of death, transformation, and spiritual legacy, Carro dormente (“Sleeping Cart”) becomes a quietly powerful meditation on memory and artistic inheritance – deeply personal, yet open to interpretation.

Untitled (from: For Joseph Beuys)

1986

From For Joseph Beuys
Ektacolor photograph, 81.3 x 59.5 cm (32¾ x 23½ in). Edition of 90 + XXX, signed and numbered.

Cindy Sherman created this edition for the group portfolio honoring Joseph Beuys; the work reflects both her distinctive photographic language and a spirit of metamorphosis often associated with Beuys’ legacy. In the image, a masked or made-up figure peers through a dense thicket of reeds, part concealed, and part revealed – evoking themes of camouflage, transformation, and the tension between nature and artifice. With its eerie palette and ambiguous setting, the work captures the primal undercurrents that animate much of Sherman’s practice, while subtly nodding to Beuys’ own mythic self-invention and exploration of the natural world as a site of meaning.
