Edition Schellmann, Munich-New York, has been publishing contemporary art editions since 1969. The first significant collaboration was with Joseph Beuys, resulting in the publication of some of his best-known prints and objects, and the catalogue raisonné of his complete editions, currently released in its 8th edition. Later, Edition Schellmann published prints and objects by Andy Warhol, Christo, Jannis Kounellis, and Donald Judd, and published the print catalogues raisonnés for these artists as well.
One of the most extraordinary edition series Edition Schellmann has realized starting back in 1992 is the Wall Works project: site-specific wall installations in editions in which the artist created a conceptual design that can be executed on walls of varying size and proportion. So far, 51 works have been realized; the entire archive collection was acquired by the Nationalgalerie Berlin in 2013 and exhibited until 2015.
In 1989, the publishing activities of Edition Schellmann in Germany as well as in the U.S. were honored by the Museum of Modern Art in New York with its exhibition For 20 Years: Editions Schellmann. In 1997, Editions Schellmann was commissioned to publish and distribute the official documenta X and documenta 11 editions consisting of fifteen artworks each. In 2003 and 2005, Schellmann published prints and objects for the 50th and 51st Venice Biennale.
Edition Schellmann / Schellmann Art has placed its projects with major museums and collections around the world.
In 2022, Schellmann Art launched ars publicata, a comprehensive archive of prints and multiples, documenting contemporary artists’ edition oeuvres in the form of freely accessible digital catalogues raisonnés and work listings.
