Richard Long

Richard Long, born 1945 in Bristol, Great Britain, lives and works in Bristol. He is known for his artistically motivated "walks" through landscapes in England, Scotland, Wales, Lapland, India, Bolivia, Mexico, California and the Sahara. His works consist of minimal interventions in the landscape itself, which Long documents in photographs and drawings, or sculptures composed of raw material found in nature.

River Avon Mud Drawings

1998

From Sequences
Three grano lithographs on Rives rag paper. Each print 50 x 40 cm (19¾ x 15¾ in), each signed and numbered. Edition of 60 + X.

This three-part edition by Richard Long is a poetically condensed visualization of natural processes. The works were created by dipping paper into the fine mud of the River Avon – a river near Bristol, where Long grew up and continues to live – creating unique, organic patterns: sediment lines, delicate branching and amorphous concentrations. Through an interplay of material, time and gravity, Long transforms ephemeral material into a lasting, almost meditative image. In this body of work, conceptual art merges with a deep rootedness in the landscape itself – as trace, as imprint, as a quiet chronicle of becoming.

Richard Long 1989 River Avon Mud Drawings

River Avon Mud Drawings

1989

Set of 3 granolithographs and 1 silkscreen (title page), each print 65 x 96 cm (25½ x 37½ in), each signed and numbered. Edition of 60.

In this four-part edition, Richard Long explores the aesthetic manifestation of natural processes. With the exception of the first sheet, which gives the edition its title, all works display the result of a simple yet powerful act: immersing paper in fine river mud. This process produces organic, chance-determined structures – the mud flows, condenses, branches out, and leaves behind unique traces. Within this quiet dynamism lies a poetic reflection on time, nature, and materiality – central aspects of Long’s conceptual art practice.

Richard Long 1988 Two Sahara Works

Two Sahara Works

1988

Set of 1 grano lithograph and 1 silkscreen, on rag paper, each print 63 x 93 cm (24¾ x 36½ in), each signed and numbered. Edition of 75.

The edition Two Sahara Works was created during Richard Long’s journey through the Algerian Sahara. There, Long carried out a simple yet powerful intervention in the landscape by clearing a circular, stone-covered area of its material — an elemental gesture of revelation. The circle, which Long describes as “universal and timeless,” is, like the line, spiral, or square, one of the archetypal forms of his work. The photographic work is accompanied by a poetic text printed in rust-red ink, arranged in a circular layout. It lists found objects from the walk, thereby reflecting the principle of infinity.

Richard Long 1986 Wind Stones

Wind Stones

1986

From For Joseph Beuys
Offset lithograph and silkscreen on white board, 60 x 80 cm (23½ x 31½ in). Edition of 90 + XXX, signed and numbered.

This edition, Richard Long’s contribution to the portfolio commemorating Joseph Beuys, unfolds a quiet, contemplative narrative of landscape. In a barren scene in Lapland – shaped by dryness, emptiness, and wind – Long draws attention to a single overgrown stone mound, used by hikers as a windbreak. This site, reduced to its elemental function, becomes a symbol of retreat and protection in a hostile environment. In this work, Long intertwines the perception of nature with existential reflection, continuing Beuys’s idea of landscape as a repository of cultural and spiritual meaning – reduced, powerful, and full of quiet intensity.
