Cory Arcangel

Cory Arcangel, born 1978 in Buffalo, New York, lives and works in Stavanger, Norway. A pioneer of technology-based art, the artist works in a wide variety of media, often encoding, hacking and reusing existing software and other digital resources such as Photoshop gradients and video games to create new works of art. Cory Arcangel is the youngest artist since Bruce Nauman to have been given a full floor solo exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York (2011).

Two digital pigment prints on Hahnemühle 300g rag paper, hand-torn, each 60 x 50 cm. Edition of 45 + 8 AP, signed on label verso of the first work, numbered on each print.

This edition by Cory Arcangel borrows from an image of the painting by Johannes Vermeer from 1665. Employing a technique referred to as "deep frying", Cory Arcangel has written code to recursively tweak an image using common image manipulation techniques such as compression, re-sizing, and modulation. Arcangel's manipulation of the original source material ultimately reaches a transformational breaking point surfacing new representational possibilities at the intersection of figuration and abstraction. The resulting works are thus a very contemporary interpretation of Vermeer's famous painting, with the two images representing different stages of the distortion process.

This edition by Cory Arcangel unfolds a fascinating interplay of light and time. Depending on the time of day and the angle of light, the surface transforms – sometimes softly shimmering, sometimes vividly glowing.
Inspired by the idea of the readymade, Cory Arcangel began using existing Photoshop elements artistically, leading to his well-known Photoshop Gradient Demonstrations series. For this work, (RR), he used "Russell's Rainbow," a pre-installed color gradient. As early as around 2010, Arcangel experimented with printing on mirrors but encountered technical challenges. It was only through collaboration with Schellmann Art that the project was eventually realized and completed as an edition.

Part of Cory Arcangel’s edition series (RR), this work reveals its subtlety in restraint. A sharply defined blue corner hovers over a field of silver, offering a quiet interplay between geometric minimalism and mirrored depth. Cory Arcangel’s use of the “Russell’s Rainbow” gradient recalls his fascination with digital defaults, while the mirrored surface reacts to its surroundings, catching fleeting reflections and turning the viewer into a passing element within the composition.

In this edition, Cory Arcangel punctuates a bold red expanse with a single mirrored circle – at once void and spotlight. The simplicity of form is deceptive; shifting ambient light animates the work, transforming it from static print into a temporal event. Referencing his early experiments with Photoshop presets, the composition reflects Arcangel’s ongoing interest in recontextualizing digital defaults, showing how familiar tools can be reframed as conceptual material.

With its sweeping arc of saturated blue, this edition by Cory Arcangel evokes movement and digital curvature. The gradient, lifted directly from Photoshop’s built-in tools, speaks to Arcangel’s practice of repurposing everyday software elements as conceptual material. Light refracts across the mirror beneath, blurring boundaries between printed surface and surrounding space – a gesture that roots the work in both the digital and the physical.

One of four editions from Cory Arcangel’s (RR) series, this vivid red composition is marked by a diagonal cut that gently opens the frame, evoking both abstraction and the aesthetics of a digital interface. Like a cropped screen or a window poised to expand, it hints at movement and transition. Arcangel’s use of stock digital imagery takes on new resonance here – a surface that, while rooted in the static logic of design software, subtly resists fixity through light, reflection, and spatial context.
