Ilya and Emilia Kabakov

Ilya Kabakov (1933-2023, born in Dnepropetrovsk, USSR) and Emilia Kabakov (born 1945 in Dnepropetrovsk, USSR) lived and worked together in Long Island, NY, where Emilia Kabakov still resides. The artist duo is considered one of the leading representatives of conceptual art. In their collaborative environments, the everyday and the conceptual merge into a multi-layered commentary on societal and human conditions. Although their work is deeply rooted in the Soviet cultural context, it possesses universal relevance. Ilya Kabakov began his artistic career as a children's book illustrator before establishing himself as a central figure in Moscow Conceptualism. His installations reflect both the experiences of the late Soviet era and broader questions of memory and utopia. Emilia Kabakov contributed international perspectives as a curator and art dealer. Since 1988, they have worked as an artist duo.

Ilya and Emilia Kabakov 1995 Untitled

Untitled

1995

Silkscreen/offset lithograph on rag paper, 70 x 88 cm (27½ x 34½ in). Edition of 60 (+ 20 A.P.), signed and numbered.

This edition by Ilya and Emilia Kabakov stages a monumental consultation table with 16 figures as a surreal allegory of power, bureaucracy, and administration in Soviet socialism. The frozen scene alludes to the futile mechanisms of state decision-making processes, while the theatrical staging oscillates between irony and nostalgia. In doing so, the work questions the illusion of individual participation within a collective system.
