Rebecca Horn’s edition New York plays with the tension between sensuality and meaning. The artist, known for her early rejection of feminine attributions – as in her performance Cutting Hair – resists clichéd representations. In these 1997 photographs, which depict the iconic yellow taxi within a predominantly black setting, the narrative intensity of the scene is heightened by dynamic painterly interventions. The work is characteristic of Horn’s play with ambiguity, sensuality, and a subtle sense of humor.
