Sylvie Fleury’s edition Happy Clinique (1998) consists of three prints, each composed of three colored stripes. At first glance, the compositions appear abstract; the title, however, points to the cosmetics brand Clinique and opens up another reading: the color fields evoke palettes of lipstick, eyeshadow and other beauty products. For those familiar with this visual language, the works immediately evoke the world of high-end cosmetics, while to others they may appear as purely abstract compositions. Fleury thus makes the culturally learned visual language of fashion and cosmetics itself the subject of her work.
