Richard Lindner

Richard Lindner (1901-1978), born in Hamburg, Germany, lived and worked in Munich, Paris and, from 1941, New York City. A distinctive figure within the American Pop Art movement, Lindner developed a highly stylized visual language drawing on advertising, comics, fashion and the urban imagery of modern life. His paintings and prints are characterized by boldly outlined figures, geometric forms and saturated colours, often depicting monumental women, couples and solitary characters. Combining elements of European modernism with the visual culture of postwar America, Lindner created an enigmatic world of power, sexuality, authority and desire.
