Nora Turato
Nora Turato, born 1991 in Zagreb, Croatia, lives and works in Amsterdam. Her practice explores the fleeting, mutable nature of language and its role in shaping our shared experience of today’s constant flow of information. Mining the endless torrent of words that saturate modern life, Nora Turato appropriates fragments of speech, slogans, quotes, and online chatter, reworking them into incisive performances, books, enamel panels, installations, and video pieces. Her work distills both the meaning and the absurdity embedded in this linguistic overload, transforming everyday noise into rhythmic, almost spell-like expressions. Moving fluidly across performance, video, graphic design, and wall-based works, Turato creates a body of work that captures the urgency, contradictions, and collective obsessions of contemporary culture.

This edition exemplifies Nora Turato’s incisive exploration of language, typography, and cultural detritus. The work employs Helvetica 52, a custom typeface the artist developed with Jung-Lee Type Foundry and Sabo Day for her solo exhibition govern me harder at 52 Walker. This altered version of Helvetica destabilizes the rational clarity of the modernist classic, bending its forms into exaggerated bulges and distortions that undermine the authority of design’s patriarchal canon. The phrase itself – ifted from a streamed horror series – resonates with Turato’s interest in phrases that surface from the incessant flow of mediated speech, from advertising to pop culture. While absurd on first reading, the work yields flashes of graphic precision through its stark contrasts and bold typographic presence, echoing her ongoing fascination with the aesthetics of cigarette packaging and corporate logos. In this way, Turato transforms linguistic fragments into visual incantations that capture both the emptiness and intensity of contemporary communication.
