Anselm Reyle

Anselm Reyle, born 1970 in Tübingen, Germany, lives and works in Berlin. Reyle is known for his bold, vibrant works that explore the boundaries between high art and popular culture. He first gained prominence in the early 2000s with his use of industrial materials such as foil, acrylic glass, and automotive lacquer, often arranged in sleek, abstract compositions. His work frequently references and reinterprets modernist aesthetics – such as Op Art, Minimalism, and Abstract Expressionism – while simultaneously questioning their legacy through a lens of irony and spectacle. By appropriating and glamorizing discarded or mass-produced materials, Reyle invites a reconsideration of taste, authenticity, and the value systems of contemporary art.

This vibrant edition series by Anselm Reyle exemplifies his signature fusion of industrial aesthetics and painterly gesture. Incorporating reflective foil collage elements alongside dynamic, hand-applied splashes of acrylic paint, each work becomes a layered interplay of texture, color, and material. The sharp geometry and high-gloss surfaces evoke modernist abstraction, while the spontaneous paint drips and neon hues disrupt the polished compositions with a sense of immediacy and play. By combining machine-like precision with expressive irregularity, Reyle continues his exploration of authenticity, glamour, and the shifting boundaries between mass production and artistic intervention.

Anselm Reyle’s edition series Untitled (2024) fuses industrial aesthetics and painterly gesture, creating works that are rich in texture and vibrant in color. While the other three works all contain dominant geometric elements in black and soft pink, this one stands out due to its more muted background and the prominent use of orange. To replicate the tactile surface of Reyle’s paintings, silver foil has been collaged onto the print before the artist additionally applied acrylic paint splatters, making each a unique work of art.

This edition from Anselm Reyle’s set of four radiates with electric color contrasts – neon yellow and soft pink collide with metallic and graphic patterns. The reflective foil is fractured into sharp planes, resembling shards of glass, set against a black background that enhances their luminosity. Pink paint drips down the surface like a spontaneous interruption, injecting a sense of rawness into the otherwise controlled composition. By combining machine-like precision with expressive irregularity, Reyle continues his exploration of authenticity, glamour, and the shifting boundaries between mass production and artistic intervention.

In this edition, Anselm Reyle emphasizes material contrast. Set against a seemingly textured burlap-like ground, iridescent foil panels intersect with striped graphic motifs in teal and black, while bold splashes of pink and blue acrylic paint energize the surface. The tactile tension between the rough fabric and sleek foil underscores Reyle’s interest in clashing textures and the artificiality of visual spectacle. By combining machine-like precision with expressive irregularity, Reyle continues his exploration of authenticity, glamour, and the shifting boundaries between mass production and artistic intervention.

The composition of this edition is dominated by warm tones and shimmering highlights. Foil elements reflect soft gradients, while neon yellow patterns and a burst of orange paint animate the structure. The asymmetric arrangement and loose paint application add a playful sense of disorder to the otherwise meticulous layering, reinforcing Reyle’s dialogue between precision and spontaneity. The use of a seemingly textured burlap-like background creates an interesting material contrast and heighten the work’s visual tactility and depth.
