Super Highway, 1969

Allan D’Arcangelo’s edition Super Highway (1969), from the portfolio 69, brings together the imagery of the American road with elements of collage and graphic abstraction. A photographic postcard of the highway and surrounding landscape is set within a composition of bold geometric forms, outlined clouds and a striking red-and-white road barrier.
The work exemplifies D’Arcangelo’s fascination with the American highway as both a physical infrastructure and a cultural symbol. By combining a fragment of real landscape with simplified signs, road markings and geometric structures, he creates a tension between the photographic and the constructed, turning the familiar experience of driving into an abstract visual language.
