Allen Jones’ edition Leg-Splash (1970), from the portfolio Europäische Graphik VII, isolates a woman’s leg and high-heeled shoe against a vivid yellow ground. The enlarged, fragmented form combines a photographic, textured surface with bold areas of flat colour and expressive splashes of black, reducing the female body to a striking graphic image.
The work reflects Jones’ recurring interest in the female figure, fashion and the visual language of popular culture. By cropping the body and exaggerating its scale, he transforms an erotic image into an ambiguous composition that moves between figuration, abstraction and commercial imagery. Leg-Splash exemplifies the characteristic tension in Jones’ work between photographic realism and simplified, graphic forms.
