Marilyn (Sunday B. Morning), 1970

This Marilyn edition is a Sunday B. Morning screenprint based on Andy Warhol’s original Marilyn series of 1967, which was itself based on a publicity photograph of Marilyn Monroe by Gene Kornman for the 1953 film Niagara. Produced in different colours from the original series, the print was published in Belgium by Sunday B. Morning, a print studio founded by two of Warhol’s Belgian friends. Although Warhol initially agreed to the project, he ultimately decided not to collaborate, and Sunday B. Morning proceeded with the publication, stamping the verso “Published by Sunday B. Morning” and “Fill in your own signature.”

Because of his friendship with the founders, Warhol subsequently signed some impressions with the ironic inscription “This is not by me, Andy Warhol.” The gesture introduces a playful ambiguity around authorship and authenticity, turning the question of who made the image into part of the work itself. The few impressions personally signed by Warhol have become particularly sought after by collectors and have acquired significant value in their own right. The Sunday B. Morning Marilyn prints thus extend Warhol’s longstanding engagement with reproduction, mass production and the circulation of images.
