Pattern is a Teacher, 2019

Rosemarie Trockel’s edition Pattern is a Teacher (2019) is a digital collage combining an image of one of her iconic wool works of the same title with a found image from the internet. The geometric striped wool work has been inserted into the latched window of a kiosk, becoming an extension of the abstract composition. The monochromatic lines of the kiosk intersect with the bold knitted stripes, creating a striking interplay between the two images.

By removing the wool work from its usual context of the gallery and making the kiosk part of the abstract composition, Trockel explores displacement, juxtaposition and allusion. The work reflects her longstanding engagement with the boundaries between craft and painting, and with the conventions and hierarchies of art.
