Tom Wesselmann’s edition set Untitled (American Nude) and Untitled (Still Life) (1964) was created for 1 Cent Life, the landmark print portfolio bridging American Pop and European Expressionism. The two works bring together two of Wesselmann’s defining subjects: the female nude and the still life. In American Nude, the simplified figure is presented through the bold, graphic language that characterizes Wesselmann’s celebrated Great American Nude series, while Still Life turns everyday objects and food into a vivid Pop composition. Together, the works demonstrate Wesselmann’s ability to transform familiar imagery into highly stylized compositions through flat forms, intense colour and a distinctly commercial visual language.
