George Segal’s plaster sculpture edition Sleeping Woman from 1970 depicts the sleeping face of a woman. The work is reduced to two essential elements of expression – the face and the hand: the face, with its soft features, appears relaxed, while the hand gently cradles an implied pillow. Despite being reduced to so few elements, the sculpture succeeds in conveying an entire situation. The viewer can almost sense the gentle silence emanating from the work, its stillness capturing an intimate moment of everyday life.
It is a delicate work that draws attention to something often overlooked: the quiet poetry of a sleeping person.
