Robert Indiana

Robert Indiana (1928-2018), born in New Castle, Indiana, lived and worked in New York City and later in Vinalhaven, Maine. A leading figure of American Pop Art, he developed a distinctive visual language based on words, numbers and bold geometric forms. Best known for his iconic LOVE imagery, Indiana transformed familiar words, letters and symbols into powerful, highly graphic compositions. Drawing on commercial signage, advertising and the visual language of everyday American life, his work explored themes of love, identity, mortality and American culture, with language itself becoming both subject and image.
